Restaurant Review: The Colony Grill Room, The Beaumont Hotel, London I HAVE been a fan of Jeremy King and Chris Corbin ever since I met them at Caprice many years ago.
- London hotel grill rooms - like the one whose waning years I remember at The Connaught - used to provide an alternative to a hotel's dressier formal restaurant. In 2014, of course, there is no dressier formal restaurant, but The Colony has enough elegance for anyone born after about 1921.
- Introducing The Colony Club Experience gaming at its very best in an internationally renowned casino. With a selection of gaming tables, members can enjoy classic games including Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat and Three Card Poker.

Colony, or Colony Bar and Grill is a restaurant, bar and grill located at 7–9 Paddington Street, Marylebone, Central London, England. It opened in early April 2010 and was run by restaurateur Carlo Spetale and the Michelin-starred executive chef Atul Kochhar.[1][2]
Atul Kocchar announced he was leaving the business in June 2011 to focus on other interests. The split was described as amicable.[3]
The cuisine of the restaurant is inspired by that of the British colonies from colonial Asia, East Africa, the Caribbean etc. but is mainly inspired by Indian street food, specifically 'the marinades, aromatic flavours and grilling methods' of the street traders of colonial Asia.[4][5] The General Manager of the restaurant is John Lacombe, formerly of The Connaught Hotel, 5th Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols and Notting Hill Brasserie amongst others. Lacombe is also responsible for the winery of the restaurant.[2] It has a reputable cocktail lounge.
Reception[edit]
The restaurant has received mixed reviews. Zoe Williams of The Daily Telegraph was highly praising and described the restaurant as 'I think this is what heaven will look like – complete with a barman making you feel it would be almost rude not to have a martini. '[4] Williams was content with her meal and remarked that the 'pancakes were made of chickpea flour (the chickpeas' main contribution was a lovely, rich density, with only the whiff of their flavour), packed with spinach, in a tomato and cream sauce'.[4]
Tracey MacLeod of The Independent was critical about the menu, saying: Online gambling self exclusion nsw government.
Colony, in slightly less leafy Marylebone, calls itself a bar and grill, but the menu is far less casual than this implies. Rather than serving a selection of patties, puris and grilled meats, or going down the Anglo-Indian route pioneered by Chutney Mary, the restaurant offers complex, recondite dishes which would have the memsahibs calling for the smelling salts. Roasted mallard marinated in lindi peppers and stone moss? Lamb meat loaf infused with rose petals? Veal vindaloo with coriander chips? Whatever this is, it certainly isn't street food.[5]
She said about the food, 'Even though many of the dishes we tried were very good, they weren't quite good enough to earn Colony a rave review', and remarked that the chicken tikka masala was 'authentically inauthentic, in its creamy sweetness and brick-red colour.'[5] Both MacLeod and Hugo Rifkind of The Times were unconvinced with the authenticity of the cuisine, mentioning that is more a fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines rather than truly Asian.[1]
Matthew Norman of The Guardian was strongly negative of the restaurant, giving it a scathing review and a score of 0.05/10.[6]
Notable diners[edit]
The restaurant is said to be a favourite of Simon Cowell's when he is in London and in September 2010 Liam Gallagher stormed out of the restaurant after the staff refused to make him a bacon butty.[7]

The Colony Club Casino, Bar & Restaurant Review
The Colony Club Casino, Bar & Restaurant is featured in these Guides:
Top 10 things you need to know about The Colony Club:
1) This may be a members' club in Mayfair, but you're still invited. The Colony Club isn't a turn-your-nose-up-at-the-common-folk kind of place. Quite the contrary.
2) The casino may be the main attraction to most of the clientele, but it's the restaurant that's the true star.
3) You will feel like a celebrity when the attentive staff act like your entourage as you're waltzed upstairs to your table.
4) Tom, Dick or Harry may not frequent here (it is a member's club after all), but Thomas, Richard and Henry are just as charming. Dress smart, suits with pocket squares and polished brogues; ladies, dress for the casino, sleek and elegant. Bare shoulders acceptable.
5) If you're on a date and you're trying to wine and dine your future mister or misses, try to get the corner seat. You can both sit on the plush sofa seating and get a little closer without even trying. However, if you're on a business meeting, choose to sit opposite each other. If business talk gets heavy, you may need that table distance between you.
6) The menu is vast, but even if you don't see anything on it that you really want, the kitchen can prepare anything you want; except pizza.
7) For starters, order the langoustine from the European menu. WARNING! The bed of black squid ink orzo stains teeth and lips. It's easy to wipe off, but you'll initially look like you tried to work the goth lip look and failed miserably (which is exactly what goths try to achieve, so in a way you'll have succeeded).
8) Trust the waiters and their recommendation on the specials. If they say the duck is delicious, the duck is delicious. An old favourite is the baby chicken stuffed with rice and roasted until it's gorgeously golden. Veggies, opt for the truffled scrambled eggs. Delightful!
9) The Middle Eastern menu is all halal. A courteous nod to the clientele's multicultural mix. Sushi lovers get to dine in a separate bar and watch the chef cut and slice his way through a fish with artistic flair.
10) Don't wear anything tight. Pudding is excessive. The bill comes with a selection of chocolates. You will struggle to walk for a while. Luckily, the casino is a good resting spot, but you may end up losing the wrong kind of pounds...read more
